CCBC Steering Committee Minutes, 12/8

CCBC Minutes Tuesday, December 8, 2015 6:30-8:00pm PieologyAttendees: Wayne Howard, Mark Mallare, Patrick Murray, Paloma Gonzalez, Tina Battiati, Jim Shanman, Craig Tabita, Julie Mendel1. Advocacy Opportunities.-- Washington/National mixed-use TOD project. A developer is hosting a community meeting on Thursday, January 7 to share plans for a mixed-use, transit-oriented development planned for the five-acre property adjacent to the Culver City Expo Line station on the northwest corner of Washington and National Blvds. The meeting is from 6-8pm at the Helms Design Center at 8745 Washington Blvd. To RSVP, contact Taylor Wolfson at 310-205-8488 or email culvercitydevelopment@lowenterprises.com . A map of the development side and meeting location is available here. Julie plans to attend.-- Expo-Northvale Bicycle Path Open House. Staff from LA’s Bureau of Engineering, Department of Transportation, Department of City Planning and Council District 5 are hosting a public open house on Wednesday, January 13 to discuss potential design concepts for the Expo-Northvale Bicycle Path. The open house is from 6-8pm at the Palms-Rancho Park Branch Library (2920 Overland Ave) in the meeting room. We’ll definitely want to have a presence at this to communicate the importance of this project.-- 8777 Washington Blvd. A local developer hosted a community meeting Tuesday, 12/15, to present a proposal for the lot at the northeast corner of Washington and National Boulevards and obtain feedback from the public. The proposal is for five-story mixed-use building that will include 15,000 square feet of ground floor retail, 30,000 square feet of office space, 80 units of residential apartments and three levels of underground parking. The developer is currently in the preliminary application stage with Culver City’s Planning Division. Mark and Wayne planned to attend the meeting. If you have questions or comments about this project, reach out to us at ccbicyclecoalition@gmail.com.-- Culver Studios expansion. Culver Studios has submitted plans to “update and modernize” their facilities, namely by building three new office buildings and adding about 1400 new parking spaces. Though it’s unclear whether those parking in this new structure would enter/exit on Van Buren or on Ince Blvd, either way the expansion will bring a lot of additional traffic in a very heavy bike and pedestrian zone. Julie will do more research on this project and bring any opportunities to advocate for bike amenities to the group.2. Events/Outreach Opportunities.-- December events report. CCBC has hosted two successful events in the past month. On Thursday, 12/3, Wayne and Mark put together a very successful bike valet at the Downtown Culver City Holiday Tree Lighting, and on Saturday, 12/5, we hosted a group ride around Culver City in conjunction with Culver City Fire Department’s annual toy drive. Both events helped spread the word about our group and the work we (and LACBC do). Check out our Facebook page for photos from these events.-- Upcoming January events. Mark your calendars! On Sunday, January 10, Wayne is planning an LACBC Sunday Funday ride that is tentatively slated to begin in or near Culver City. And on Tuesday, January 12, we are planning our New Years Party, which Tina Battiati has generously agreed to host. Stay tuned for more details – and, as always, please reach out to ccbicyclecoalition@gmail.com if you’d like to help plan any CCBC event.3. Vice Chairman Election. Member Mark Mallare expressed an interest in the Vice Chair position and in the last few months has generously donated his time to CCBC, particularly in helping to plan and host our recent bike valet and group ride. Members present unanimously voted to make Mark Vice Chairman of CCBC.4. Rules of Governance & Name Change. There was a discussion about updating our current Local Chapter Rules of Governance. Wayne proposed we temporarily adopt – for the next 60 days – LACBC’s template for Local Chapter Rules of Governance, and work within an appropriate timeline to rewrite the LACBC template to fit our needs and context. Wayne also resurfaced the idea of changing our name from Culver City Bicycle Coalition to Bike Culver City. Members present voted a) to submit a temporary rules of governance change to LACBC, b) establish a subcommittee (composed of Wayne, Paloma, Tina and Mark) to rewrite the rules template to fit our needs, and c) during this transition, we also voted to maintain Wayne, Julie and Mark as officers. Members present also voted to change the name from Culver City Bicycle Coalition to Bike Culver City. Changes to the Local Chapter Rules of Governance, including changes to the chapter name, must be approved by the LACBC board.Next Meeting – New Years Party! Tuesday, January 12th, 6:30pm. We will circulate more details and an address soon. In the meantime, wishing you a joyful holiday season and a happy 2016.
