Free Bike Safety Classes

Throughout the summer of 2015, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition is offering a series of FREE bicycle safety classes. Funding for this program is provided by Metro through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.For more information and to register visit: la-bike.org/bicyclesafetyclassesThere are three different classes being offered:

  1. "Basic Bicycling Skills"
  2. "Street Cycling Skills" (TS101-A) - Session A
  3. "Street Cycling Skills" (TS101-B) - Session B

All classes are taught by trained League Cycling Instructors (LCIs). These classes are for adults and youth who are at least 14 years old. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or an adult guardian.

"BASIC BICYCLING SKILLS"This class is a 2-hour workshop and is an abbreviated version of "Street Cycling Skills" Session A (it is NOT a substitute for the Session A class for those who want to take the Session B class).  This class covers bicyclist rules of the road, basic principles of bicycling in traffic, common hazards encountered by bicyclists and how to deal with them, simple steps to ensure your bike is in good condition, and proper helmet fit and adjustment. This is a classroom only workshop. No bicycle is needed for this class. Students will be enrolled on a first-come first-served basis. This class is limited to 24 students. All participants will receive materials, a helmet, and lights at the end of the class."STREET CYCLING SKILLS" (TS101-A) Session AThis class covers bicyclist rules of the road, basic principles of bicycling in traffic, lane positioning, destination positioning, common hazards encountered by bicyclists and how to deal with them, simple steps to ensure your bike is in good condition, and proper helmet fit and adjustment. This is a classroom only workshop. No bicycle is needed for this class. This class is 4 hours long. You must take "Street Cycling Skills" Session A before you can take "Street Cycling Skills" Session B. Students will be enrolled on a first-come first-served basis. This class is limited to 24 students. All participants will receive materials, a helmet, and lights at the end of the class."STREET CYCLING SKILLS" (TS101-B) Session BThis class is conducted entirely outdoors, on bicycles. Participants will need to bring a bike in good working condition along with the helmet they were issued in Session A. Fixed gear bikes are not recommended and fixed gear bikes without a handbrake will not be permitted. In this class, participants will learn bicycling handling skills, including emergency maneuvers. Using the principles taught in Session A, participants will ride on public roads with instructors who will help participants put what they've learned into practice, on the street. This class is 4 hours long. You must take "Street Cycling Skills" Session A before you can take "Street Cycling Skills" Session B. Students will be enrolled on a first-come first-served basis.
